The NFL does not schedule games at random times on Sunday. Most weeks follow a familiar pattern, built around television windows rather than individual teams.
The early window
The first group of Sunday games typically kicks off at 1 pm Eastern. This is the largest block of the afternoon and usually includes several games shown regionally. If your team is in the early window, the game is normally finished by late afternoon.
The late window
A second group starts at roughly 4:05 or 4:25 pm Eastern, depending on the broadcast arrangement. These games are designed to follow the early window so viewers can move from one to the next. West Coast home games often appear here because 1 pm Pacific is 4 pm Eastern.
Sunday Night Football
The featured prime-time game usually starts around 8:20 pm Eastern. It is a national broadcast, so it is the easiest game to find regardless of where you live. Because it is the last game of the day, it is also the one most likely to be moved for competitive reasons late in the season.
What this means for planning
- Times are set in Eastern, so convert them carefully if you are elsewhere.
- A 1 pm Eastern game is 10 am on the West Coast and early evening in Europe.
- The 8:20 pm game can land after midnight in the UK and Europe.
- Always confirm the current week's schedule; flex scheduling can change the night game.
Once you know the three windows, an NFL Sunday becomes much easier to navigate.
